* Installing and Setup… When installing Windows 10, I do so from a FlashDrive, loaded with recent copy of the free installer from Microsoft. When installing, I delete all partitions and start fresh. I always click Express Install, but curious people can click Custom Install. To skip login when you turn on the computer, you can't be signed into a Microsoft Account. If signed into a Microsoft Account, you may later add a short pin to make signin faster [click Start and type Pin]. Microsoft Account lets you use the so-so Cortana Voice Assistant. I skip it on install because my Remote Desktop app and SteamLink dislikes it, but you can add it later.

Official Free Windows Installer, click “Download Tool Now” and have a empty 16gb FlashDrive ready. You'll eventually still have to register Windows on your own: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

* Setting up an elderly persons computer? Ensure there is Internet, access to an email website (gmail likely, not any app because an app can break), an accurate password book, simple instructions to use email, speakers are working [verrify using YouTube], windows is registered, office is registered, and the system has been rebooted a few times. Have them do a few simple tasks to see if they know how, and simply write down instructions on paper. Check in on them for a few days.

* Advanced UAC Security… If you want to set system security to high, if paranoid about viruses, click Start, type UAC, slide the slider to the top. I usually set it to high, which makes me click “Ok” a few more times when some apps open. There are no bad effects. Click Start, type UAC.

* Updates… Always have all Windows updates. Check monthly.

* Ninite website** is safe and can auto-install a bunch of free software, and you may run it again every few months to update that same software. Ninite updates my Java which is an important language your computer uses. Ninite doesn't install itself, it only installs your apps.

* Show File Extensions… Click Start, type File Explorer Options and click on it. Or… Open a folder, click File, click Change Folder & Search Options, click View tab, uncheck Hide Extensions. This means a photo titled Josh will now show up as Josh.JPG so you know it's JPG format. Visual as follows…

* Disable special effects… Optional. For max system speed, I disable pictures and transparency and most special effects. I don't disable thumbnails.

Click Start, type Transparent, click “Make Start, Taskbar, and Action Center Transparent”.

Then click Start, type Appearance, click “Adjust the Appearance and Performance of Windows”.

* Install Drivers… Device Manager helps show what drivers are not installed. Usually Windows Update installs most drivers, when you click Start and type Update. For Device Manager, Click Start, type Device Manager. My HP printer won't work unless I have the full software package installed. I still disable it from Startup, but it's needed to be installed. If a driver stops working, Device Manager is the place to uninstall it and then reboot for it to auto-reinstall.

* Janitor Apps… For system health, I run these once a month: CCleaner (from www.piriform.com) and Defrag and Cleanup. Selecting almost all options. They aren't fully automatic.

* Disable junk startup apps… This will speed up a PC and prevent conflicts. Task Manager helps me see what apps run at startup. I install AutoRuns from Microsoft website, to fully see what apps are scheduled to run apart from Startup.

* Taskbar… I set Taskbar to show all apps and system icons. Auto-hide taskbar. Small icons on Taskbar. Click Start, type System Icons to adjust your clock-area icons. Then click Start, type “Select which icons appear”. Click on it. At the top is a toggle, set it to On.

* Label Maker… I print a tiny label showing what key to press to open the computer “BIOS” screen. And hours for the stock market.

* Make a System Restore Flashdrive… Once everything is installed and updated, I create a System Restore to a external Flash Drive (aka thumbdrive). Click Start, type Recovery, click Create a Recovery Drive.

* Backup important files/photos/music… I backup all my files to a 512gb Flashdrive and also to a 1tb External hard drive. So the files are safely in TWO seporate places. I backup about every two months. A necessary annoyance. Or you WILL lose all your files. Once a year, I backup files to GoogleDrive online, which takes a few days, in case there is a fire or robbery. Once every few months I cut my Smartphone photos to the backup drive. I alternate backup drives, for someday when one of them dies. Backup drives DIE like anything else, so use two. Unless you know what an SSD is, never shake nor bump a backup drive. Shut down a PC before disconnecting the backup drive, unless you know how to “Safely Disconnect” it.

* Passwords… Windows let's you power on you computer in with a short Pin, or a Hotmail password, or no password if you aren't connected to a Microsoft Account. I keep a physical paper password book in a drawer in my office, which never ever leaves my office. When I need a password away from home, I take a photo of it with my phone or write it on scrap paper. An unimportant password can be short, but will likely get hacked. Important passwords must be at least 10 characters, including upper and lower case, at least two symbols, at least two numbers, and never any dictionary words. Over time you'll acquire a few hundred passwords, for banking and taxes and email and shopping sites and many others. An example password I might make, looks like this: @wdwd45723#@_8z9734w@

* Safety and Scams… Don't eat around a computer, liquids and sticky grease will harm a laptop. Don't shake an External Harddrive or laptop, don't ever drop it, don't block the air fans or it'll overheat. Don't install anything unless your files are backed up, and never any shady toolbars or scams. Never respond to an email unless you know 100% who it's from. Don't call a phone number your computer shows you, it might be a scam. READ and photograph errors, don't blank out, because it'll save you money. An inaccurate description of an error will cost you money. Most things said online and on Facebook are LIES, they are gimmicks and advertising, you CAN'T win a free vacation online. When a bunch of popups happen and you might have a virus, just shut down the computer and wait a minute because it's likely just a scam.

* Desktop Right-Click menu needs to stay uncluttered… When installing an app, read the options, uncheck “Desktop Right-Click Menu” and “Shell Integration”, and “Auto start with Windows”.

* Apps I use… Personally, here are most the apps I (Royce Barber) have installed: Chrome browser. Office. Evernote. K-Lite Video Codecs from Ninite. CCleaner cleans junk files. Fusion 360 (3D design, replaces Sketchup). zBrush Core (for 3d sculpting). Autodesk ReMake (for photo scanning into 3D). Photoshop cc 2017. Speccy. qBittorrent. Natural Reader 14. Vector Magic (expensive vector app). CdBurnerXP. Pepakura Designer. 7zip replaces Winzip. Filmora for video editing. VLC Player plays videos. Printer software. 3D printer software. Steam (for games and SteamLink gadget). Google Earth. KeepVid Pro. Games are Guildwars2, No Man's Sky, Quake Champions, Rocket League, Elder Scrolls Online. oCam for screen recording. And I try to use many included Windows apps like Notepad, Calc, Audio Recorder, Alarm clock, Skype for video calls, Edge browser (when needed).

* For advanced users, here are my Chrome Browser extensions. AdBlock, Adblock for YouTube, Alexa Traffic Rank, Allow Right-Click, Auto Replay for YouTube, Coupons at Checkout, ebay for Chrome, Full Page Screen Capture, Honey, Keepa - Amazon Price Tracker, Open Screenshot, Search the current site, Super Auto Refresh, The Great Suspender, View Background Image, WOT: Web of Trust. Noting, I only enable an extension when I'm using it.

* Antivirus: Windows 10 already has an antivirus built in, so you don't need a redundant one unless it has some feature you love. If you must install a pointless antivirus, AVG or Avast! are popular.

* Photoshop advises I alter my Samsung SyncMaster 2343bwx monitor profile. Samsung website steps: RightClick> Personalize> Display> AdvancedSettings> ChangeDisplaySettings> Advanced Settings> ColorManagement Tab> Color Management> All Profiles> (Click your SAMSUNG profile listed in the devices page)> Click Remove> Click Continue> REBOOT. Now photoshop will be happier and images won't show as yellow.

* Hauppauge Tuner (if can't get it working, try these old steps): Install the WinTV7 without the bundled driver. For my HD Satellite DirectTV, add a new channel as Manual, on Antenna, on Ch.60. Also hook up any composite connection, such as your DVD player or camcorder. No special settings needed. Note that there is a 2 second buffering delay. Use VirtualDub for viewing (not recording) Composite input without delay, simply click File>Capture Composite AVI.

* Firewall Import (optional): Any time, IMPORT your Windows Firewall. Start>wf.msc>IMPORT. This will keep software from calling home.
* Duel-screen wallpaper. My Samsung 2494HM 24“ screens are each 1920×1080, but together they are 3840×1080. The image must be exactly that size. The goal is to use 1 image on 2 screens. Right clicking to set as wallpaper, doesn't work for duel screen. You must RightClickDesktop>Personalise>Browse. Select “Tile Image”.

* Ensure hard drives are max speed: My Computer > Right-Click any drive > Hardware tab > select a internal drive > Properties > Policies > Enable Better Performance, and enable Write-Caching Policy. Include “Turn off windows write-cache buffer” IF you use an external battery. Set up all INTERNAL drives like this. Only if you have a great external battery.
* Install any Cloud software like DropBox or GoogleDrive. This could take days to download.

SSD (Solid State Drive) Optimization

* For old PC, ensure your BIOS is set to ACHI and not IDE. This is important.
* Defrag myth: Some people say to disable defrag in Windows7 and Windows8, but that's for older OS's than 7, 8, 10, etc. The OS knows it's an SSD and will not defrag it. Ensure you have all Windows updates before using an SSD. Don't disable Defrag, but disable anything which uses an old-style mechanical-drive defrag. Windows uses SSD-Trim in their defrag app, which an SSD needs.
* Limit the amount of useless read/writes to your hard disk.
* Ensure your Antivirus is safe with SSD's.
* Ensure your TRIM software (Like Intel SSD Toolbox) has the tune up scheduled about weekly, and that it's really running. Windows Defrag does a fairly good job, but still sometimes needs to be manually run.
* Set Photoshop's Scratch folder to an old spinning drive. This can help your SSD last a bit longer.
