Mia Wao Mio, Miracles at Sea
.
Short Story by Royce Edward Barber
.
Doctor Ray Mio was a brilliant ocean scientist in his 30's. He invented a dangerous series of undersea engines called the AquaEngine. Multiple governments pressured him to develop the AuqaEngine as fast as possible, aiming for sheer power rather than quality control. The governments planned to install the AquaEngine in a drill that would bore down to the Earth's magma and so create man-made volcano's that would generate free electricity. The governments wanted to overprice the electricity. The doctor noted that such drilling is dangerious and if not done propperly would alter the environment dramaticaly and end life as we know it. Holes in the earth, with shifting tectonic plates, is a messy process. The governments wernt interested in trivial matters such as life, they had their eyes on controling the planets energy.
The AquaEngine turned out to be powerful yet emitted a harmful wave of vibrations, gravity, magnetic forces, and various chemical feedback. It looked like multiple rounded sapphire bricks, with protuding tubes and gears, and spotted by engraved veins. The engines were encased in a thick metallic shell to protect from the unstable chemical feedback, and labeled a success. Could the metalic shell keep the AquaEngine under control?
.
Celebration was in order for the creation of Dr. Ray Mio’s AquaEngine. A glamorous new cruise ship was fitted with a small yet powerful version of the AquaEngine. Set out to sea for one month, the cruise was slated to scout out a location for the drilling, and test the doctors AquaEngine. Dr. Ray Mio did not board the cruise ship. He argued that the governments twisted his arm to develop the AquaEngine too hurridly. He added that the engine was not complete, but was given cold heartless stares in return. Boarding 20 snobby scientists, all greedy for drilling into the earth without due research. One scientist was pregnant and had a child a week into the cruise, as expected for the ship had medical equipment. The baby was born, the cruise went on as planned, and everyone was having a good time. Approaching the end of the cruise, the scientists were troubled regarding the engines emitting unexpected cooing noises. Thus they started for shore at the sound of these noises. The dilemma with the engines was hard to diagnose, as the metallic engine shell was permanent. The metallic engine case started to bloat, baffling the scientists. This metal casing was of the strongest form. They radioed the coast guard who were only a matter of hours away. Dr. Mio boldly advised the coast guard to keep very clear of the area if indeed the engine casing was making any unforeseen noises. A disaster of immense proportion was looming in the mist of the waters.
.
Suddenly the metallic engine case cracked with a mind-pounding shriek. Eternally frozen expressions all around. The engine immediately engulfed the cruise ship in a poisonous wave of vibrations, chemical shards, and intensive gravity throughout the boat. The twenty scientists and one child, all immediately fainted and died. The screaming groaning engines sparked and reverberation violently shook the sea. Lightning rained down, water boiled, and birds fell out of the sky. Swirling rainbows formed in the sky as chemicals drifted upwards like angels. The engines wound down, as unknown chemicals spilled out melting the surrounding surfaces, twisting the engine vault room into crumpled tinfoil. The ship started to sink as the coast guard arrived, but was instructed keep clear of the chemical disaster. Nets were floated out to encase any debree.
The sinking cruise ship was condemned, survivors or not, guarded by the Japanese military. Dr. Ray Mio hurried to the scene in a little Speed Boat called the ResearchCruiser. Put on a hazardous environment suit and dived underwater to enter the ship. He had to know what went wrong which freed so many souls before their time. Once onboard, Dr. Mio took out some testing gear and carefully lowered the power of various electrical devices due to the water still leaking in. He observed the area and took photos of some rooms. Even with the suit, the doctor was dizzy at the leftover vibrations and chemicals emitting from the walls. Ocean water was now trickling in at an advanced rate. At the push of a button, a few emergency flood lights popped on, glaring off wet surfaces. The emergency lights were overpowered and shattered one by one. The trickle of water widened and the ship groaned and shifted, throwing the doctor about the room. A blinding a surge of electricity briefly circumnavigated the ship and lit up the waters like a galaxy of suns. Crystalizing the tips of the shimmering ocean waves, then the crystal exploded like fireworks. Bits of crystal disolved into the waters, fizzing with static charge. The doctor passed out at the electrical surge, drifted a few hours and awoke to a loud buzzing sound. It was the ship intercom, screeching and buzzing, as water rippled around his aching body. He thought he heard faint screams, shivers and tingling made the hair on his arms stand up. He then heard gurgled crying for a second over the crackling noisy intercom. The intercom faded in and out with the flickering emergency lights in the cold dark tomb at sea. The doctor waded through the water, glancing at his digital map of the boat, frightened of the dark and wondering what the crying sounds could be coming from, yet eager at the impossible possibility of a survivor. The noises of the ship put the dizzy doctor in a state of dreamlike terror, as he saw dark horses and shadows dancing about, oblivious of him. The sweat on his brow poured out, fogging up his safety suit. Living a sudden nightmare, he scrambled to locate the source of the crying in this chemical mist. He walked through one door only to find himself drifting through delirious visions of the internet, circuit boards pulsing like a heart beat, information swirling about him faster and faster, flying screens cutting at his arms. Screaming at an in-particularly stabbing pain, Dr. Mio snapped back to reality as many of the cruise ship’s surfaces shocked him as he walked through the colossal ship. Unbalanced and nearly deciding to leave, he forced himself to walk into a control room, he systematically shut off intercoms until he found the one the crying was coming from. He sat a moment to catch his breath and cry himself. Rushing as best he could, falling over a few times, he got to the nursery and spotted a surviver. It was a crying baby. Wrapping it in a few dry beach towels, leaning on walls, he carefully made his way to the entrance. Flooded. Next he examined his map, as his vision blured in and out, he spotted a way to exit the ship. Hopefully he wouldnt have to rerout to pass by the radiating engine room. The ship started to roll, if there was any spare room for fear it was quickly filled at the thought of the ship crashing down a hill at the bottom of the ocean. A series of halls later, into a storage compartment, there was a large air-tight container that he couldnt quite reach. The ship must have rolled a bit because all the sudden the container was accessible and pressing against his face. He placed the baby in the container, and headed for the surface of the ship, walking on the wall. His digital map of the ship was still glowing bright, leading him on. The cruise ship, now nearly on its side, had an end near the surface of the water. Finding his way to a half-flooded room he pulled the storage container down into the water and out the top of the ship. The air in the container floated them to the surface, looking like debree. Japanese spot lights covered the area for a moment then moved on. He opened the storage container to allow the baby fresh air. The crying was muted by helecopters and noisey boat horns. Once again Dr. Roy Mio fainted and awoke to the dawn of a new day. He knew his research cruiser would be in the area and drifted towards it. The cruise ship are was netted off from the rest of the ocean so no debree would float off. Swimming over the net, the doctor located the research cruiser five miles out to sea. Exhausted once on board, he prepaired some food for him and the child, both sick and dazed. He sent out an encoded signal to his various science partners around the world that he was ok and found nothing at the scene of the sunken cuise ship. All was silent, for the first time in hours, and the doctor sat inside the boat, furthest from the ocean. His body numb and not alowing him to move.
.
Once feeling good enough to see and move, the doctor set out for the marina at a fast pace. The wind blowing through his hair, the sea breeze clearing his mind. Looking back he couldn't see the military vessels. Two lives at sea, with no world to disturb them. He started talking into the air, as if the baby could understand his words. He talked of reading all about the sea as a child, and his parents telling him there was no such thing as ocean science. He talkd about the feeling of freedom on his first voyage with a crew of colege professors on a private yaht. Growing up he moved around the world on missionaries, but never lost his dreams for investigating the mysteries of the ocean. One day he would have a lab at sea, when he could get some time to design it.
.
Once docked, the professor sat in the speed boat awhile to decide what he would do with the baby. The military couldnt find out there was a survivor, and what if the baby needed medical attention? He picked up the baby and took it to a college medical lab where he let students tend to it. The students name the baby girl Mia Wao Mio. The baby stayed at the college lab for a few months, with the Dr. at its side much of the time. The students help emensly to take care of the baby and give the doctor time to work on various projects. The Japanese government contacted Dr. Mio and informed him that there was to be no further research of the AquaEngine until the chemical disaster was out of the news. He put the plans aside and started development on computer software that would monitor the AquaEngine and help control chemical leaks.

VISUAL OF MIA’S UNWANTED SUPERNATURAL ABILITY
.
The following ability is induced by the chemical spill from when Mia was a baby, the vibrations of the engines aligned her blood somehow that a haze of vibrations forms in her mind and the mind of those around her at unpredictable times. During these times, a delusional state kicks in for multiple people and they see the same images and hear the same sounds as if they were together in an alternate reality. Another thing that has been known to kick in this delusional haze is when Mia moves too fast. She has the ability to move much faster than a normal human, and she believes that she may even be able to cut through the fabric of mid-air if she moves fast enough. Creating a cut in reality. This cut in reality, although just a delusion created by vibrations and Mia’s subconscious mind, feels very real. Mia does have superhumanly fast reflexes, sometimes that bewilder her friends. When she moves too quickly, such a sneeze or sudden spasm of any kind, the air that is hit forms a bright blur and a cloud of motion. Sometimes this cloud splits open, like a cut in the fabric of mid-air. Inside the cut are memories of whoever looks in, memories that the looker thought they had long forgotten. Mia can’t normally bring this cut-cloud to exist by sheer will, it’s very tiring and the cloud dissipates quickly. When the cloud of bright vibration gets cut open, the victim has an urge to look inside as an escape from a drowning feeling and water waves anywhere else they look.

MIA’S UNDERSEA LAB
.
Mia’s science lab is a an undersea dome covered in sand. It appears to be a hill in the sea bed, but from within the dome one can see out to the sea. Within the dome, sitting here and there are little distorted glass spheres, with a unique flower inside each one. The flowers are intricate beautiful circuit boards, stemming out from a central computer in each sphere. The glass spheres bounce light around to the other spheres; it’s the transfer of data via a network of these flower spheres. Additionally, there are little metal fans floating around in the air, that when together they project a floating computer screen. The computer screen is silent, soft to touch, and somewhat three dimensional as the fans can move around and react to touch. The little metal fans resemble feathers joined at the end, each 1CM long, floating aimlessly around the room like falling rose pedals. All of Mia’s inventions closely resemble nature’s own shapes and textures, thus she takes no credit for the design.

End of Story:
.
The AquaEngine is improved and build, and a drill constructed. The engine is still fairly unstable and needed a mathematical formula to start it safly. At the age of 140, Mia has a dream where she see’s Dr. Wio rescuing her as child. Witnessing the AuqaEngine explode, gives her ideas on how to develop a better engine to safely bore through the earth. It only would need an operating system to monitor the engine pressure. In the dream Mia see's parts of her life, and a vision of Dr. Mio telling her where he stored an operating system he was working on. Mia traveled to Dr. Wio's old lab, uncovered an old computer and started it up. She discovered it was the operating system she would need to safly launch the AquaEngines. Heading back to her undersea lab, Mia realizes how old she is. She places the operating system on her computer as she coughs up blood and presses some buttons to make the comptuer figure out various formulas to start the engine. Mia dies as the engine starts up and soon power is being generated for many towns. (Heat wave was comming in and towns didnt have nearly enough power to survive so this new free energy saves many many people).
Mia dies of old age as the engine starts solves power outage problems for many nations. On her last heart beat, people cheer and tears because the city lights are turning on for the first time in many years.

Random Info From a previous version of this story, yet to be updated:
.
Mia’s mother was Japanese, her father was American. Born in Tokyo Bay, Japan; on a cruise ship that soon sank into the depths of the bay as Mia was less than a month old. The cause of the sinking was a prototype engine that went bad and released poisonous chemicals into the water. Mia’s parents died from the chemicals, while Mia came back to life an hour later by electric shock. Mia was adopted by a doctor who rescued her from the sunken cruise ship. The very doctor at fault for accidentally sinking the cruise ship. His name is Dr. Wio, and his prototype engine had exploded and killed 20 scientists aboard the cruise ship. Dr. Wio was pressured by multiple governments to develop his prototype engines, and the research was too rushed, thus the engines when installed in the cruise ship had errored and lives were lost. The Japanese government had condemned the area as a hazardous chemical area and didn’t look for survivors. Dr. Wio buried the 20 diseased scientists before the Japanese government covered the cruise ship in cement to hold back hazardous prototype-engine chemicals from escaping. Dr. Wio didn’t live many years after getting a dose of the chemicals while rescuing Mia. Growing up, Mia helped Dr. Wio with his various wild inventions and made him look the continual genius. Dr. Wio passed on early in his years, leaving Mia many half-baked ingenious ideas that she had trouble comprehending. She had help though; a mysterious man would send her complete schematics of her very own incomplete inventions, in a much simplified version. Mia did not like to over simplify things as the mystery man did, but his mental capacity was limited compared to hers. Nonetheless she was grateful for the help, if not worried for her safety. The mystery man turns out to be one of Mia’s surfing buddies, and it turns out he is also Dr. Wio’s younger brother! Mia and the mysterious brother become cautious of each other from then on, and repair each others inventions from a great distance. The mysterious brother is saddened but knows Mia is not one for relationships. Mia is disheartened that she has to hurt his feelings, but she does not love him at all, and doesn’t want to be near his confusing feelings. Mia eventually constructed an undersea laboratory near the sunken cruise ship her parents died in. Nobody would check there, it was in an area thought to be a chemical hazard, and perhaps to an everyday person it would be fatal. Grown up, Mia secretly lives in her underwater getaway where she invents nature-themed technologies and hangs out with sea life. She often emerges from the sea to socialize with her local human friends who live on and or near the beach. Only Mia and Dr. Wio’s younger brother know of the undersea lab. Her friends simply know Mia as a local beach girl who designs popular surf boards, but it’s obvious she’s hiding her vast intellect behind a shy wave and half-smile. Nobody knows she lives in the ocean because she’s usually out surfing. When bothered by someone, Mia becomes very aggressive and scares people but never harms them. Mia is a very caring and somewhat a giggly girl, who generally keeps quiet unless there is an opportunity to liven up the people she cares for. She boldly believes in peace and kindness.
